Renting a scooter in the Maldives: what to know
The local way to get around — licences, helmets, prices and where to ride.
Last updated June 2026
Scooters are how the Maldives moves. Across the islands — and especially in the busier town centres — a scooter turns every errand into a five-minute hop. Here's what visitors and new riders need to know before renting one.
Why scooters dominate
Most Maldivian islands are small and flat — many are walkable end to end — so cars can feel oversized and parking in the busier centres is scarce. Scooters are the default for commutes, school runs and everything in between.
What you need
A valid motorcycle licence is required. Foreign licence holders should check the current rules — the Maldives recognises licences from a number of approved countries for short visits, while others need an International Driving Permit or a locally issued or endorsed licence. See the official sources at the end of this guide. On Dhihvaa, you'll also complete a one-time ID verification before your first booking.
Helmets are mandatory on the bridges, link roads and highways — the Sinamalé Bridge and the Addu and Laamu link roads among the best-known — and enforced by the Maldives Police Service. On ordinary island streets a helmet isn't always required by law, but riding with one is always the smart call, so ask the owner to include one.
Where you can ride
You can ride on virtually any inhabited island — nearly all have road networks. Where islands are joined by a bridge or link road you can ride between them; otherwise the scooter stays on the island you rent it on. On smaller islands a scooter (or bicycle) covers everything in minutes.
What it costs
Scooters are the cheapest motorised rental in the Maldives — typically a fraction of a car’s daily rate. Owners set their own prices on Dhihvaa, most with weekly and monthly discounts, and the listing shows the daily rate and any refundable security deposit up front.
Riding rules and safety
Ride on the left. Speed limits are about 30 km/h in town centres and up to 50 km/h on the Sinamalé Bridge and similar links. Two people per scooter maximum, wear a helmet, and keep your licence with you — checks happen.
Frequently asked questions
Can tourists rent a scooter in the Maldives?
Yes. Scooters are the most listed vehicle type on Dhihvaa and the easiest way to get around almost any inhabited island. You need a valid motorcycle licence and a one-time ID verification.
Do I need a motorcycle licence for a scooter?
Yes — a valid motorcycle licence is required, and owners check it at pickup. Foreign licence holders should check whether their licence is recognised or whether they need an IDP or a locally endorsed licence (see the sources below).
Is a helmet required in the Maldives?
On the bridges, link roads and highways — including the Sinamalé Bridge and the Addu and Laamu link roads — yes, it's mandatory and enforced. Elsewhere it's strongly recommended. Ask the owner to include a helmet with the rental.
Do I need a helmet on the Sinamalé Bridge?
Yes — helmets are mandatory on the Sinamalé Bridge and the connected highway, enforced by traffic police. Wear one and observe the posted speed limit.
